The article ostensibly is about Al Regnery, head of Regnery-Gateway, but what got the media's attention was Mayer's claim that Aldrich backed away from his book's most sensational story, the claim that President Clinton ducked bodyguards to hide under a blanket in the backseat of a car that whisked him to the Marriott Hotel for a late night rendezvous with a female. The New Yorker magazine fired the opening shot, in a piece by writer Jane Mayer. This time not only on the book and its author, but also on publisher Regnery-Gateway, which specializes in conservative, non-fiction books. Unlimited Access had its hardcover run, but perhaps fearing the impact of the paperback edition, friends of the White House have launched another attack. What emerged was a picture of a White House in disarray, debased by drug use, debauchery and disdain for laws and regulations adopted to insure the safety of the president and first lady, and the security of sensitive classified information. The public was eager to read what the White House was anxious to conceal.

White House efforts to sink it backfired. Aldrich, like Damore, used talk radio to promote his book. Gary Aldrich followed in the footsteps of the late Leo Damore, whose book about Ted Kennedy, Senatorial Privilege, faced the same treatment.

Although his revelations made headlines, he was effectively banned from major network TV shows, and his book was not reviewed by establishment publications.īut the book became a best-seller. They leaned on talk shows to shun Aldrich. Howard Shapiro, the FBI general counsel, thoughtfully gave a copy to the White House, enabling its hatchet men plenty of time to plan and prepare a media counterattack. Aldrich had to submit his manuscript to the FBI for approval. Stephanopoulos tried to sink Aldrich's book before it went into stores. GARY Aldrich, retired FBI agent and author of the best-selling Unlimited Access, has been demonized by the establishment media, thanks largely to the machinations of George Stephanopoulos, the spinmeister who used to manipulate the media from his White House office.
